Croatian Studies 2001 - Information Sheet

CastleMACQUARIE UNIVERSITY is one of the few tertiary institutions in the world where Croatian language, culture and literature are taught for the purpose of training specialists. The Croatian program at Macquarie University and Croatian Studies Centre are promoting language learning, research and publications dealing with Croatia and Croatians both in their homeland and in Australia.

CROATIAN STUDIES CENTRE consists of two parts:

  • Croatian Studies Centre with library and Croatian Archives,

  • Croatian Studies Program with thirteen units available anywhere in Australia.

CROATIAN UNITS can be studied in external or composite mode and:

  • As a part of Macquarie University degree

  • As a part of Diploma in Languages program

  • As a part of a degree at any Australian university (Cross-Institution) and as a Single Unit (Non -Award Students)

There are two sequences which constiute the minimum requrement for the coherent study in Croatian:

For students who have completed HSC in Croatian or have completed their secondary education in Croatia or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Croatian Units Avaliable:

100 Level (1st year)

CRO 150 Introductory Croatian I (First and Second Semester) 3cp

This unit is for those students who have no previous knowledge of Croatian. Essentials of grammar, reading, writing and drills on useful expressions will give students a basic knowledge of the Croatian language.

CRO 155 Introductory Croatian II (First and Second Semester) 3cp

This unit is for students with knowledge of Croatian equivalent to completing CRO 103 or 150. Students receive a further grounding in the structure of Croatian and the vocabulary needed for everyday conversation.

CRO 108 Croatian Culture & Civilisation (First and Second Semester) 3cp

The aim of this unit is for students otherwise unfamiliar with Croatia and its contributions to world culture. It will deal with the social, economic, political and cultural development and history of Croatia. The unit is taught in English.

CRO 160 Introductory Croatian III (Summer Vacation Unit) 3cp

A vacation unit based on close reading of texts (fiction and non-fiction) with written exercises, designed to prepare students with only elementary knowledge of Croatian for CRO 250.

200 Level (2nd year)

CRO 230 Croatian Literature (First semester 2002) 3cp

The unit examines authors of Croatian realism, modern as well as contemporary Croatian authors (from Budak and Krleza to Marinkovic and Gavran). Some texts are offered in Croatian, and majority of texts both in Croatian and English.

CRO 250 Intermediate Croatian I (First Semester) 3cp

Morphology: Categories of gender, number and case. Declension of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals. Verbs: Category of number, person, voice, tense and mood. Tenses, Moods, Aspects of verbs. Derivation. Common phraseology.

CRO 255 Intermediate Croatian II (Second Semester) 3cp

An appropriate review of morphology. Introduction to phonetics and phonology with particular attention on pronunciation on phonemes, especially those which have no equivalent in English. Changes in sounds. Croatian standard accentuation. Oral practice and written composition.

300 Level (3rd year)

CRO 350 Advanced Croatian I (First Semester) 3cp

An appropriate repetition of phonetics and morphology. Repetition of orthography with special attention to orthographic difficulties. Syntax of the sentence, sentence structure in Croatian. Reading comprehension. Oral exercises. Introduction to translating.

CRO 355 Advanced Croatian II (Second Semester) 3cp

Syntax of cases. Introduction to word formation. Word-order, syntax of verbal tenses and moods. The Croatian language in diachrony and synchrony. A survey of the history of the Croatian standard language. Introduction to interpreting.

CRO 360 Advanced Croatian III (First Semester 2003) 3cp

CRO 365 Advanced Croatian IV (Second Semester 2003)

CRO 330 Croatian Drama, Theatre and Media (Second Semester 2002)

Note: CRO 230, CRO 350, CRO 355 and CRO 330 are offered every other year.

How to Enrol

  • Enrol as a Degree Student at Macquarie by applying to the University Admissions Centre by the end of September. Address: University Admissions Centre, Locked Bag 500, Lidcombe NSW 2141. Tel: (02) 9330-7200.

  • Enrol as a Cross-Institution Student at Macquarie provided that you are enrolled for an award at another tertiary institution. Written permission regarding acceptance of Macqarie units towards an award at the home institution will be needed. It is important to remember that students in this program should re-apply each year for further study at this university. For application closing dates, ring (02) 9850 7317. Year 12 and new tertiary students may only apply when they have received an offer from a university or tertiary institution. Forms are available from: The Registrar, Admissions and Student Records, Macquarie University, NSW 2109.

  • Enrol as Single Unit Student (Non-Award student). Application forms are available from Centre for Open Education, Macquarie University NSW 2109. If you have any questions ring COE on (02) 9850-7470. The dates by which applications must be lodged are November or January (late application intake) with the closing date for second semester applications in early June.

DIPLOMA IN LANGUAGES (Croatian)

  • 24 credit points (8 one semester units - at least six language courses - from Introductory Croatian to Advanced Croatian II or from Intermediate Croatian to Advanced Croatian IV).

  • Option of two Residential Units in Croatia (Intermediate and Advanced)

  • Candidates are not required to be simultaneously enrolled in a degree program. (This program can be taken in combination with another degree at any Australian University).

  • Students enrolled in this program are liable for HECS.

  • Candidates must be eligible for admission to a degree at Macquarie or another approved tertiary institution.

  • Advanced standing: Students enrolled in the Diploma may be granted credit for up to 12 credit points for relevant units completed at an approved tertiary institution, and that are not part of an award.

CERTIFICATE IN LANGUAGES (Croatian)

  • 12 credit points (4 one semester language units - Introductory and Intermediate, or Intermediate and Advanced I and II)

  • Candidates are not required to be simultaneously enrolled in a degree program (This program can also be taken in combination with another degree at any Australian University).

  • Students enrolled in this program are liable for HECS.

  • No admission criteria are specified for the Certificate.
