Welcome to Croatian Studies
Overview
The teaching program of the discipline of Croatian Studies at Macquarie
University was introduced in 1983 thanks to the Commonwealth Governments
special grant under its community languages program. This made Macquarie
one of the first tertiary institutions in the world where Croatian
language, Croatian literature and culture enjoyed full academic
and cultural autonomy, freedom and independence.
The discipline of the Croatian Studies at Macquarie University
aims to provide a sound knowledge of the Croatian language and culture
through intensive language teaching as well as through a critical
analysis of Croatian literature, history and culture.
In
conjunction with Croatian Studies at Macquarie University the Croatian
Studies Foundation of Australia and New Zealand was established
in August 1984 with the aim of supporting the Croatian Studies program
at Macquarie. In addition to fundraising activities, the Foundation
organises cultural events to promote knowledge and understanding
of the Croatian language, history and culture. As the Foundation
was established for the charitable purposes of education, all donations
to the Foundation are tax deductible.
In 1994 the Croatian Studies Centre was established within the
School of Modern Languages and it was officially opened in August
1998. The Centre has been engaged in research and publication activities,
including the journal Croatian Studies Review, which makes the Centres
research available to Croatian andnon-Croatian speaking audiences.
As of 1998 the Republic of Croatias Ministry for Science
and Technology has been supporting both the Croatian Studies program
and the operations of the Croatian Studies Centre.
