Study Abroad
Macquarie University encourages its language students to take the opportunity to travel and study abroad. The university provides generous travel scholarships for this purpose. In addition, the French government, through the French Embassy in Canberra, also offers financial support in various categories. Successfully completed study abroad units may be counted towards a Macquarie award (degree, diploma or certificate). Students are expected to enrol in study abroad units before leaving the country.

Students have the opportunity to count one semester of approved study at a French university or affiliated language centre towards their degree at Macquarie. They will be assessed by staff in the French program upon their return. A maximum of 12 cp can be included in a coherent study program in French at the third year level. Up to 9 cp can be earned in the form of In-Country Study Units. Any balance will be credited in the form of regular Macquarie units in a relevant discipline. There are two modes of in-country study:
a) Language study abroad
Students enrol in university language courses specifically designed for non-native speakers of French. They are tested on arrival at the overseas institution and placed in a class at a suitable level. At the end of their stay, students have the opportunity to sit for the host university's diploma or the national diplomas (DELF or DALF). The host institution is charging a reasonable fee for the full semester (12 to 16 hours per week for 12 to 14 weeks). HECS fees are paid at Macquarie. The universities selected by Macquarie have an international office dedicated to the advising and support of foreign students (formalities, accommodation).
b) Exchange program
Students enrol in semester courses offered in any discipline by French universities with which Macquarie has an exchange agreement. Candidates must have a good level of French fluency. Their program of study must be discussed with Macquarie's French staff and approved by the Head of the Department of European Languages before enrolment can take place. Exchange agreements provide for students to pay HECS fees at Macquarie and be exempted from paying fees in the host university. More information can be obtained from Macquarie International.
