at the University of Athens
All universities strongly advocate the idea that it is beneficial for students to spend some time in countries where the language they are learning is the official means of communication. In view of this, the Discipline of Greek Studies at Macquarie University encourages students to enrol in the Vacation Course which takes place every year during the long vacation for a period of six weeks at the University of Athens, Greece. Whatever their language level, students of Greek are given the opportunity to study in one of the most prestigious universities in Athens. Scholarships may be available to students provided they meet certain criteria.
MGK130 Beginner's Residential Short Unit
3 credit points
This is a beginners intensive language course offered by the University of Athens, Greece. Courses will be taught from Monday to Friday, four (4) hours daily for six weeks. A very high percentage of the course will be allocated to the teaching of language structure and oral expression. Some teaching of Greek culture and civilisation will be included. Assessment will be based on the final written examination.
MGK230 Intermediate Residential Short Unit
3 credit points
This is an intermediate intensive language course offered by the University of Athens, Greece. In order to practice the language, students might be asked to engage in active interaction with everyday life in Athens and to give a thorough interpretation of specific events that take place in Greek society. A course on Greek literature, culture and history will provide additional options to students in order to complement the courses already offered by the home University. Assessment will be based on the final written examination.
MGK330 Advanced Residential Short Unit
3 credit points
This is an advanced intensive language course offered by the University of Athens, Greece. At this level students are expected to achieve sophistication and fluency in the language component, since the program requires more direct contact with the broader Athenian environment. Lessons in Greek literature, history and culture and excursions to specific archaeological sites and museums in Athens and around Greece will be integrated into the language teaching program in order to enhance student knowledge of Greek language and culture. Assessment will be based on the final written examination.
