Honours Program
An Honours degree is traditionally the first step towards a career in university teaching and research. The B.A. (Hons) at Macquarie University is a separate degree, normally requiring one year’s full-time or two years’ part-time study. Mid-year enrolment is possible. Part-time enrolment is only available to those students who can demonstrate work or other commitments in excess of 20 hours per week.
Graduates of other universities are welcome, as are graduates of other disciplines, but they may be asked to take a qualifying program.
What you need in order to do Honours:
- You need to have qualified for the B.A. with a major in a European Language
- A minimum of 24 credit points in European Language units, at least 12 credit points at 300 level
- An overall grade point average of 2.5
- A grade point average of 3 in 300 level units
The Honours program in European Languages consists of the following components:
EUL 401 Research Methods and Resources (1. semester)
This unit introduces students to using research tools – e.g. library, internet, databases, archives - relevant to research in the field of European language and cultural studies. Research methodology is addressed in the context of writing research questions and choosing, collecting and analyzing data. Practical tasks help students focus on the development of a research plan and the writing up of a literature review.
EUL 402 Key Ideas Shaping Europe (2. semester)
This unit examines the concept of Europe througha discussion of major ideas and movements in philosophy, literature and the arts in their historical context. Students will gain an overview of theoretical constructs that have shaped Europe in its present form and have contributed to the challenges Europeans face in the 21st century.
Honours Thesis
A thesis of 12,000 to 15,000 words in the field of European language and cultural studies. By and large, students are at liberty to work in an area and topic of their choice subject to approval by the respective discipline coordinator.
In addition, all students will complete two seminars in their chosen language area.
