ITL102 Introductory Italian I (First Half Year)

For beginners or near-beginners in Italian, it presupposes no prior knowledge of the language. The unit provides a systematic study of the basic grammar and idiom of standard Italian. It has an essentially practical aim directed at functional language usage, oral and written expression.
ITL103 Introductory Italian II (Second Half Year)

Introductory Italian II is the continuation in the second half-year of Introductory Italian I. It provides a further systematic study of the basic grammar and idiom of standard Italian. ITL102 and ITL103 are designed to reach the equivalent of matriculation level in language.
ITL106 Introductory Italian III (Summer Vacation)

This third unit of Introductory Italian takes place during the summer vacation. It allows students to revise and consolidate their knowledge of Italian and develops students' reading skills. Students are required to complete a number of assignments, which they submit by mail, and to sit for an examination during the February enrolment period.

ITL203 Readings in Italian (Second Half Year)

The aim of this unit is to consolidate students' knowledge of written and spoken Italian through analysis and discussion of a variety of contemporary authentic texts, including audiovisual material, and to familiarise students with a variety of linguistic registers of Italian. The material studied will provide students with deeper insights into contemporary Italian culture and society and present opportunities for discussion of topical issues in Italian.
ITL204 Facets of Italy (Second Half Year)

This unit investigates the historical problem of national identity in Italy. A variety of written and audio-visual materials will provide students with an overview of core values and important historical events that have shaped modern Italy, including mass migration to Australia. The course aims to raise students' intercultural awareness by examining the complex issue of identity and migration, and the emergence of new concepts of transnational and global identity.
ITL210 Intermediate Italian I (First Half Year)

This unit is intended for students who have completed one year of Italian (ITL102 and ITL103), for students who have completed Italian studies at HSC level and for native speakers. The unit aims to develop students' competence in understanding and speaking, reading and writing standard Italian.

ITL302 Contemporary Italian Literature (Second Half Year)

This unit analyses Italian culture, history and society through key literary works by prominent 20th century writers such as Italo Calvino, Carlo Levi, Dacia Maraini. The aim of this unit is to promote fluency in reading Italian and to develop students' skills in critical analysis and introduce students to the basics of academic research including essay writing skills and literary criticism.
ITL306 Italian Cinema (First Half Year)

This subject examines social and political reality in postwar and contemporary Italy through film. It looks at topical issues such as the mafia, the representation of women, regionalism, religion, language and dialect, migration and consumerism as represented, explicitly and implicitly, in some of the best known films of Italian cinema. By tracing the journey of postwar Italy's struggle for self-definition and quest for national identity, the films screened also offer an overview of the most important periods and genres in Italian film production, from neorealism to 'la commedia all 'italiana', and introduce students to some of Italy's best known filmmakers.
ITL308 The Italian Renaissance (First Half Year)

This unit introduces students to the Italian Renaissance, a key historical period that marked the point of departure from the medieval to the modern world and laid the foundations for modern Western values and society. The unit provides an overview of the wide variety of aspects touched by this period of rapid change and development, from the arts and architecture, to science and politics, society and government, and introduces students to some of the key cultural achievements and figures of that period.
Please note that the unit will be given in English and is open to all 300 level students.
ITL310 Advanced Italian I (First Half Year)

This unit is intended for students who have completed ITL210 and ITL211. Using a communicative approach incorporating the study of language through film, the unit aims to develop further the four language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
ILT311 Advanced Italian II (Second Half Year)

Advanced Italian II is the continuation of Advanced Italian I. At the end of this unit students will have covered most aspects of Italian grammar and have acquired good speaking, reading, listening and writing skills.
ITL378 Italian Research Option (First and Second Half Years)

This unit provides students who wish to go on to honours level with the opportunity to acquire basic research skills through the completion of a research project.
Students wishing to enroll in this unit need to seek special approval from the Head of Italian Studies.
ITL348 Advanced Italian III (First Half Year)

This advanced level Italian unit is intended for students who have completed ITL 311, Advanced Italian III. The course is designed to refine skills in reading (contemporary and authentic texts), comprehension (audio visual materials), speaking and writing. Advanced topics in Italian grammar are covered and opportunties for discussion of topical issues at advanced level are provided.
ITL349 Advanced Italian IV (Second Half Year)
