
Degrees and Other Awards
Russian at Macquarie University can be studied in internal and external modes:
- as part of a Macquarie University degree
- as part of a Diploma or Certificate in Languages program (transfer between Certificate and Diploma as well as between Diploma and degree is possible for qualified candidates before completion of the program)
- as a single unit
- as part of a degree at any Australian university (cross-institution)
Students can further their studies in Russian by completing an Honours year, MA or PhD.
Degree
Students have the option to either major in Russian or incorporate it as an addition into their chosen academic program. Russian units may be taken as part of different degrees and awards, the most common of which are Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies and various combined degrees with an Arts or an International Studies component. Major in Russian
There are two study patterns for students who intend to complete a major in Russian:
- Those who have no prior knowledge of Russian or whose knowledge is not sufficient to warrant admission into the post-HSC study pattern (see below) will follow the Undergraduate Study Pattern (Russian – Beginners).
- Those who have completed HSC Russian or who have similar qualifications will follow the Undergraduate Study Pattern (Russian – Post-HSC).
General requirements for both study patterns are the same:

| Maximum number of credit points at 100 level | 30 |
| Minimum number of credit points at 300 level or above | 18 |
Diploma in Languages
The Diploma in Languages (Russian) is a three-year part-time program that is equivalent to a major in Russian (24 credit points). It is open to anyone who qualifies for admission to a degree program at Macquarie University or an approved tertiary institution. A Diploma in Languages (Russian) can be completed together with or after a degree in another field at Macquarie or another tertiary institution. Students can transfer from a Diploma to a degree once they have achieved 12 credit points with a GPA of 2.0.

Certificate in Languages
The Certificate in Languages (Russian) is a two-year part-time program (12 credit points), and no admission criteria are specified. It can be completed together with a degree or as a stand-alone program. Students can transfer from a Certificate to a Diploma if they have achieved 9 credit points with a GPA of 2.0.
Diploma students may be granted up to 12 credit points for relevant units completed at a tertiary institution and not part of a completed award, and Certificate students up to 6 credit points.
The Certificate in Languages and the Diploma in Languages are undergraduate HECS awards.
Students enrolled in the Certificate and the Diploma should choose units from the following list (credit points are indicated in brackets). Entry is at the beginners (RSN150/155) or the post-HSC (RSN250/255) level.

Single Unit (Non-award)
Non-award enrolment is for students who wish to commit themselves only to short periods of study. No admission criteria are specified.

Cross-institution Study
Students from another university in Australia may study Russian at Macquarie University on a cross-institutional basis and have the Russian units credited towards their degree at their home university.

Honours in Russian
An Honours program (part-time or full-time) is available for those students who have successfully completed a major in Russian as part of a Bachelor’s program. It involves a teaching component consisting of 4 units, of which two are common to all Honours programs in European Languages, as well as a thesis. A minimum GPA of 3.0 at the third year level applies. More information is available at the department-wide Honours page.
