Study Abroad
The Department of European Languages has introduced a program that offers Macquarie students different ways to study Spanish overseas. These studies will be credited towards their award (Degree, Diploma or Certificate).
We offer our students two ways of studying Spanish in Europe or Latin America as part of their Macquarie degree.
You can:
- attend an intensive language course in Mexico, see Residential Short Units
- spend a semester or two at a university in Spain, Chile or Uruguay,* see In-Country Study Units as an exchange student
In either case, you enrol for a Macquarie Spanish unit so that the In-Country Study program can be counted towards your degree.
Residential Short Units from 2007
SPN120 - Introductory Spanish Residential Short Unit - 3 cp; 3/4 weeks
SPN220 - Intermediate Spanish Residential Short Unit - 3 cp; 3/4 weeks
SPN320 - Advanced Spanish Residential Short Unit - 3 cp; 3/4 weeks
These units consist of either three weeks of Spanish language and culture study during the mid-year break in July or four weeks in January. We have already one Residential Short Unit in "Spanish Language and Mexican Culture" at the Tec de Monterrey, Mexico and many more are presently being organised! Check out details and other exchange programs in our website: http://www.international.mq.edu.au/abroad/short_term.html
In-Country Study Units from 2007
Students will have the opportunity to enrol for one (or two) full semester(s) of approved study at selected Spanish and Latin American universities and will be assessed by Macquarie's staff upon their return. These units will be credited (6cp each), and one can be included in a coherent study program in Spanish at 300 level.
a) Language study abroad
Students enrol in university language courses specifically designed for non-native speakers of Spanish. They are tested on arrival at the overseas institution and placed in a class at a suitable level. At the end of their stay, students have the opportunity to sit for the host university's diploma. The host institution is charging a reasonable fee for the full semester (12 to 16 hours per week for 12 to 14 weeks). HECS fees are paid at Macquarie. The universities selected by Macquarie have an international office dedicated to the advising and support of foreign students (formalities, accommodation).
b) Exchange program
Students enrol in semester courses offered in any discipline by Spanish and Latin American universities with which Macquarie has an exchange agreement. Candidates must have a good level of Spanish fluency. Their program of study must be discussed with Macquarie's Spanish staff and approved by the Head of the Department of European Languages before enrolment can take place. Exchange agreements provide for students to pay HECS fees at Macquarie and be exempted from paying fees in the host university.
