SPN101 – Introductory Spanish I - (Semester 1)
(3 credit points)
This subject is designed for students who have never had instruction in Spanish. Students who have had two or more years of Spanish in high school or a study abroad experience in Spanish are not eligible for this course.
This course aims to develop the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
SPN102 – Introductory Spanish II - (Semester 2)
(3 credit points)
This subject is designed for students who have completed SPN101 or who have had some instruction in Spanish before or who have had a study abroad experience in Spanish. Students who have had two or more years of Spanish in high school are not eligible for this course.
This course aims to develop further the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
SPN103 – Introductory Spanish III - (Summer Vacation)
(3 credit points)
This subject is designed for students who have had the equivalent of one year’s instruction in Spanish.
This course aims to improve the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing acquired in SPN101/SPN102 or equivalent study.
SPN120 – Introductory Spanish Residential Short Unit
(3 credit points)
This is a residential unit that will take place in different education institutions overseas. It is intended for beginners or near-beginners in Spanish who want to experience a living language environment.
SPN201 – Intermediate Spanish I - (Semester 1)
(3 credit points)
This unit is for students who have completed SPN103 or SPN120. It follows a communicative approach and is designed to further develop skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking.
SPN202 – Intermediate Spanish II - (Semester 2)
(3 credit points)
This unit is for students who have completed SPN201. It follows a communicative approach and is designed to further develop skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking.
SPN210 – Passion and Repression - (Semester 2)
(3 credit points)
This unit will extend the abilities of students studying Spanish at Intermediate level by exposing them to a variety of genres (film, poetry, theatre) that explore the expression of desire of Spanish speaking women against the power of dominant gender constructions. It is expected that through a feminist Foucaultian analysis of these works the student will learn about an important aspect of these societies.
SPN220 – Intermediate Spanish Residential Short Unit - (Summer or Winter vacation)

This is a residential unit that will take place in different education institutions overseas. It is intended for intermediate students in Spanish who want to experience a living language environment.
SPN301 – Advanced Spanish I - (Semester 1)
(3 credit points)
This unit follows a communicative approach and is designed to further develop skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking developed in SPN202 or equivalent study.
SPN302 – Advanced Spanish II - (Semester 2)
(3 credit points)
This unit follows a communicative approach and is designed to further develop skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking developed in SPN301 or equivalent study.
SPN320 – Advanced Spanish Residential Short Unit - (Summer or Winter vacation)
(3 credit points)
This is a residential unit that will take place in different education institutions overseas. It is intended for advance students in Spanish who want to experience a living language environment.
SPN325 – Rebellion and Change - (Semester 1)
(3 credit points)
This unit will extend the abilities of students studying Spanish at advanced level by studying the social and political movements in Spain and Latin American that are shaping their development. The course will look into the impact of ethnic/regional, anti-globalisation and social justice movements, such as ETA in Spain, the Resources Wars in Bolivia and the Piqueteros in Argentina. It is expected that through lectures and seminars students will learn about the synergy of the Hispanic world and will be inspired to embark in further research on the topic.
