CRO230 Croatian Literature

Welcome to CRO230 Croatian Literature.

This unit is designed to provide students with an overview of Croatian Literature and enable them to study a number of Croatian short stories, poems, dramas and novels. It also provides an insight into the Croatian cultural heritage from the point of view of Croatian writers and playwrights. The unit also deals with the basics of literary theory and cultural studies. However, the emphasis is not on the study of literature, but on Cultural Studies in a broader sense. A number of selected topics will be studied, from the history of literature to comparative analyses of various storytellers and poets. Literature is a most complex part of expression of the nation, of, what is said 'narration of nation'. By reading novels, short stories and poems one would become better equipped not only to better understand Croatian literature, but also Croatian culture, costumes, the way people think, communicate and interpret the world and people that surround them. Students should have sufficient knowledge of Croatian in order to read short stories and plays in Croatian, as well as compare them to English translations. Students should also be able to write in both English and Croatian. Approximately half of the material used in this course will be in Croatian. There is printed material and tapes provided as well as computer mediated communication. Students will be able to use unit's bulletin board for discussion with one another and unit convenor. There will be some tasks in a form of discussion which will be part of final assessment.
