EUL101 Societies of Europe
Welcome to EUL, "Societies of Europe". This is a general education unit, taught in English.
It will provide you with cultural information about a range of societies in Europe. In this course, "societies" is interpreted both in the sense of communities living within national boundaries and in the broader sense of communities with a sense of shared cultural identity or identities.
The course is divided into sections according to individual cultures. In each section, the lecturers will provide you with
- an overview of geographical factors
- an historical overview
- relevant socio-political information
- information about selected aspects of the arts and everyday life which shape the society concerned, including the language(s) spoken
By looking at these factors, you will be able to gain an overview and a better understanding of Europe and its diverse cultures. You will also be introduced to key concepts arising from cultural studies in a European context such as cultural identities, hybridity, nations, cultural memory as well as key organisations such as the European Union.
